The Espace Dali took the place of the old wax museum, the Historial of Montmartre, which closed down more than 15 years ago!
Opened in 1991, this space is dedicated to the works of genial Catalan surrealist, Salvador Dali, home to more than 300 of his original works and the largest collection of his sculptures and engravings in France.
By the end of the 1920s Dali developed an interest in the psychoanalytical theories of Sigmund Freud, and he began painting dreamlike and fantastic landscapes peopled by symbolic elements such as the horse, unicorn, egg, crutch, ants and melting watches. His works can be analyzed in a multitude of ways, and the sculptures and engravings to be found here explore this surrealist universe.
As well as the Beaux Arts, Dali touched on many disciplines including design, advertising, cinema, and most importantly, fashion, which he considered a new form of expression for his "surrealist ideal". For that reason the Espace Dali decided to organise, in parallel, a temporary exhibition entitled Dali and Fashion. The most prestigious names in French haute couture were asked to create a dress as a tribute to the master, resulting in some astonishing creations, both magical and surrealist, signed by Paco Rabanne, Sonia Rykiel, Loris Azzaro, etc.
