The Moulin Rouge

The Moulin Rouge is the only windmill on  the Butte of Montmartre never to have been used as such !

The Moulin Rouge, the most famous cabaret in the world, opened in 1889 on the Boulevard de Clichy.  It became successful immediately thanks to its legendary dancers and singers who were immortalised by Toulouse Lautrec: La Goulue, Nini Patte en l’air, Grille d’Egout and many many others… 

It was made famous by the quadrille naturaliste (later to become the French Cancan), a frenetic dance in which the women throw up their skirts in time to the music and everyone goes crazy!

Destroyed by fire in 1915, the Moulin Rouge re-opened in 1926 with a special revue and an already notorious troupe of dancers.  It was the beginning of a new era, with Mistinguett, Josephine Baker and Maurice Chevalier…
